Description: You can use a TP-Link Router as a VPN client with your Access Server.
Follow the steps below.
Step 1: Create an Access Server user account for your TP-Link router
- Sign in to Access Server's Admin Web UI.
- Go to User Management > User Permissions.
- Under New Username, type the username for your TP-Link. For our example, we enter "TP-Link."
- Click Allow Auto-login.
- Click Save Settings and Update Running Server.
Step 2: Configure "tls-auth" on Access Server
Access Server adds a layer of security to the VPN tunnel called the TLS Control Channel Security. To make a successful connection from your TP-Link router Access Server, configure tls-auth as shown below:
- Click Configuration > Advanced VPN.
- Under TLS Control Channel Security, set tls-auth to yes.
- Click Save Settings and Update Running Server.
Step 3: Download a connection profile (.ovpn file) for your TP-Link router
- Click User Management > User Profiles.
- Select your TP-Link user account and click New Profile.
- In the pop-up module, select Autologin and click Create Profile.
- The connection profile (.ovpn file) downloads to your computer. We recommend changing the name to the username for easy management.

That finishes the Access Server configuration.
Step 4: Configure the TP-Link router
- Sign in to the TP-Link router UI.
- Click VPN > OpenVPN.
- Click the OpenVPN Client tab and click Add.
- Enter the following configuration details:
- Client Name: Friendly name for your OpenVPN Client Settings We use "TP-Link" for our example.
- Remote Server: The Access Server's IP address.
- Local Network: Your TP-Link router's internal network.
- WAN: The Interface your TP-Link Router will use to access the internet and connect to the VPN.
- Browse: Select the connection profile we generated from the previous step.
- Click Import and OK.
- Click the OpenVPN Tunnel tab to see the status.
Step 5: Verify connection
You can verify that the OpenWRT router is connected from Access Server's Admin Web UI.
- Sign in to the Admin Web UI.
- Click Status > Current Users.
